Surgical Abortion

Women’s Choice offers terminations of pregnancy to 14 weeks from your last menstrual period. This type of abortion is relatively low-risk and normally takes only five to seven minutes. Both local and conscious sedation are available at Women’s Choice.

When You Arrive At Women’s Choice

A receptionist will greet you and ask you to complete a medical history form. After a review of your chart, you will be brought to the laboratory where you will leave a urine specimen in order for your pregnancy to be confirmed. A small amount of blood will be drawn to test for anemia and to determine your RH factor.

One of our physicians will perform an ultrasound to establish the size of your pregnancy.
A qualified peer counselor will then explain the abortion procedure to you. You will be given the opportunity to ask questions and to discuss your feelings and concerns about your decision. The counselor will give you post-operative instructions and discuss risks and complications with you. She will also be happy to talk about birth control methods that are available to you.

In the operating room, you will be attended to by a nurse, anesthetist, and Board Certified Gynecologist. Once your procedure is completed, you will rest in the recovery room. After approximately 30 minutes, you will be discharged by an RN.

Non-Surgical Abortion

For women who are under 8 weeks pregnant, Women’s Choice offers an alternative to surgical abortion. “Abortion by pill” is an option for women who are less than 56 days from their last menstrual periods. Some women prefer non-surgical abortion as an alternative to surgery and anesthesia.

Women’s Choice offers Mifeprex, also known as “RU-486, to patients who meet the criteria for this method. After blood work and vaginal ultrasound, counseling is given to explain the procedure and answer questions to help you decide if this procedure is right for you.

Mifeprex is administered in our office, followed 2 days later by another medication called Misoprostol, which the patient inserts vaginally at home. This second medication causes the uterus to expel the pregnancy tissue.

A less frequently utilized method of non-surgical abortion is called Methotrexate, an injection administered to terminate a pregnancy. Regardless of which method you choose, a follow-up visit is required at Women’s Choice to ensure that the procedure was successful. In rare instances, a D&C may be necessary to remove any retained tissue.

The Morning- After Pill

Emergency contraception, commonly called “the morning-after pill” can be used to
prevent pregnancy after having sex without birth control or if a birth control method has failed. It is an option for women who have had unprotected intercourse and do not wish to become pregnant.

You are a candidate for emergency contraception if you have had unprotected intercourse within the last 72 hours. If used within 72 hours after sex without birth control , emergency contraception can be very effective. A woman with a history of blood clots, high blood pressure, or cancer of the breast, uterus, or ovaries, may not be considered a candidate for emergency contraception.

Is an abortion a safe procedure?
Most terminations of pregnancy are performed within the first trimester of pregnancy. During this early stage, there is very little risk involved when an abortion is performed by an experienced gynecologist.

Will the procedure be painful?
Most surgical abortions are performed using some type of anesthesia, either local or conscious sedation. There is little or no discomfort during the surgery. Normally, you will experience some abdominal cramping, similar to menstrual cramps, right after the procedure.

How long will I be at Women’s Choice?
Your visit to Women’s Choice will be probably take approximately 2 hours. This includes your recovery time. It would be wise for your driver to leave during this time and return to accompany you home.

Is a non-surgical abortion safer than a surgical abortion?
There are advantages and disadvantages to both procedures. A non-surgical abortion can only be done within 56 days, (less than 8 weeks) of your last menstrual period. This procedure usually causes more bleeding and cramping than a surgical abortion. However, some women prefer this method because there is no surgical or anesthesia risk involved. If our physician’s evaluation finds you eligible for either procedure, it becomes a matter of personal choice.

Will I be contacted after I leave Women’s Choice?
There should be no reason for us to call you after you have left the facility. If on the rare occasion that we do, we will not speak to anyone but you. Our staff is extremely sensitive to your privacy and confidentiality.

Do I need the consent of my parent or spouse to have an abortion?
Currently, New Jersey Law does not require parental consent or notification. Although involving your parents, spouse or friend may be helpful in making the best possible choice, ultimately, the decision is up to you.

Appointments
Phone counselors are available Monday through Saturday between the hours of 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM to answer your questions and schedule appointments. Please provide us with any pertinent information regarding your medical history at this time. Free pregnancy testing is available Monday through Saturday. It is a good idea to call us first so that we may accommodate you with a minimum of waiting.

Payment Policies
Payment is due at the time of the procedure. We accept cash, money order, MasterCard, Visa, American Express, and Discover. No personal checks are accepted. Our fees include lab work, counseling, and ultrasound, as well as anesthesia. Post-operative medication and a follow-up examination are also included in the fee.

We accept most insurance plans. If you would like to use your insurance as payment, please indicate this when making your appointment. We will be happy to verify coverage before you come in.
